  1. I recently wI recently was approached by phone on a plan to save me money on my Medicare Supplement insurance which I have through United Healthcare and AARP. I received a call and a visit from a very pleasant agent from Nashville and everything sounded great: saving money on my healthcare with no risk of losing benefits. I was told I would be evaluated and notified if I was approved and have a chance to reject the plan if I wanted. The first notice I had of being approved was an ACH from my bank account at a cost of $20 above the rate I was given. The second notice was a card in the mail for the service. No confirmation of elegibility. No Policy to look at to see if I wanted it and I paid double my cost since there was no way to cancel the other insurance already paid. Since I still had my old plan and I was now paying for two plans at the same time which would negate any savings for months. I decided I did not want to be in this plan regardless of potential savings. My suspicions of bad service were confirmed when I was left on the phone waiting for a response from your customer service for 20 minutes. The representative, who finally answered, cancelled my plan [hopefully] but I was left paying a $20 enrollment fee. This is a case where saving money at the expense of service is not worth it. United Health Care always is rapid and pleasant and takes care of my problems so I guess I learned why I am paying $400 a year more and it is well worth it.

    • Sounds like you had an agent that was not very effective at his job. A qualified agent would be able to let you know which companies charge a policy fee when applying and which ones do not. I recommend going to to review some of the rates in your area. There are over 25 Medicare Supplement Carriers that run quotes through the system so you can see if $400 more a year is too much!

      Another a good agent should do is qualify you for health questions. If needed they should call the underwriter and verify your health status and the prescriptions you are taking so there is no waste in policy fees.

  2. Does CIGNA, American Retirement Life have any future plans for adding “silver sneakers” to their plan. I have many friends whose supplement includes this.

    • Great question. Most Medigap policies (Medicare Supplement) plans do not include silver sneakers. However, most Medicare Advantage plans do include this benefit. Humana Insurance Company is the only insurance company that I know of off the top of my head that has Silver Sneakers available for Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicare Supplement Plans.
